App Review: Rise & Recharge

At NND we often talk about the importance of moving more and taking regular breaks from sitting, and now here’s a tool to help you do just that.

The Rise & Recharge app was developed by Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute on the basis of their research showing a link between sedentary behaviour and the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

On average, adults sit for about nine hours each day, and much of this time is continuous sitting with little movement. This lack of movement can lead to unhealthy levels of blood glucose, insulin and blood fats.

What’s more, research also shows that doing regular exercise may not fully protect against the health risks of long periods of continuous sitting.  So even if you go to the gym for an hour or two each day, if you spend the rest of the day sitting you are still at risk.

Rise & Recharge is designed to help you sit less and move more. Download the free app to help change your sitting habits and reduce the health risks of prolonged sitting. Note: the app uses the accelerometer built into your phone. Some Android models do not have a built-in accelerometer, so an external motion tracker will be required.
